The “Biomonitoring and taxonomy of aquatic macroinvertebrates” service at IDAEA offers services for the collection of macroinvertebrate samples in surface aquatic ecosystems (rivers and lakes), basic physicochemical characterization of water (pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen), and the assessment of river habitat and riparian vegetation quality using in situ indices. Additionally, it specializes in the processing and taxonomic identification of benthic macroinvertebrate samples at the family and/or genus level, as well as the development of various biological indices for water quality monitoring based on benthic community composition, following standardized protocols approved by the European Union Water Framework Directive.

Conditions

The service requester will contact the laboratory, providing a detailed explanation of their needs. The laboratory will issue the corresponding quote, and the service will be carried out based on this.

The laboratory has the necessary field equipment and materials for sample collection. Additionally, the laboratory is equipped with optical instruments (microscopes and stereoscopes) required for the taxonomic identification of macroinvertebrates.

The service cost will also include the use of consumable materials necessary for field and laboratory work (ethanol, vials, jars, labels, etc.). The results report will be issued within a timeframe established according to the number of samples and the requested taxonomic resolution level. The identified biological material will be delivered to the requester upon demand.
