Project Description

: Research into the presence of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environmental matrices has been increasing in the last decades, due to the concern of the possible damages that these compounds can cause both the population and the organisms aquatic To deal with the occurrence, distribution, and destination of PPCPs and agrochemicals in the environment, reliable and efficient analytical methods are required. The relatively low concentration, high polarity and thermal lability of some compounds, coupled with their interaction with complex environmental matrices, makes the analysis a challenge. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the presence of pesticides and PPCPs in water for human consumption in water supply and sludge from water and sewage treatment plants to provide technical and scientific support for decision-making on quality surveillance actions water for human consumption in Brazil. For this, modern and qualified methods employing DLLME and MSPD in addition to the Liquid Chromatography coupled to Sequential Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of pesticides and PPCPs in water and sludge will be used. This theme is of great relevance for Brazil, also for the southern region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, since in this region the economy is based on agriculture, highlighting the cultivation of rice in large areas, as well as industrial production, mainly of fertilizers, petrochemical and fish. It is also noteworthy that in this region there is a population increase due to the development of the naval industry and port activities. These activities, in conjunction with the domestic effluent emission, generate contamination of surface water by agrochemicals, in the case of agriculture, and of drugs and other contaminants emerging in the case of domestic effluents. Therefore, the availability of validated analytical methods will allow monitoring bodies, institutions or companies to implement, together with university laboratories, programs to monitor these contaminants in water and ETA sludge, and to make the necessary decisions in case of excessive with respect to the respective MRLs or be another parameter in order to establish limits for those contaminants present that do not yet have their limits established by the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency, resulting in a huge advance towards the preservation of the health of the population, providing subsidies for the decision-making of the supervisory bodies, in the sense of legislation and protection of the population's health. Methods will also be available for the determination of these compounds in ETA sludge making it possible to investigate the efficiency of removal of these compounds in water treatment plants.
