Project Description

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent metal that affects environmental and human health adversely. The Juruena National Park, an of total protection of the Brazilian Amazon, is one of the possible scenarios of contamination, due, among other factors, to mining activities, deforestation and agricultural practices, all potential sources of Hg into the environment. In this study we examined Hg and methylmercury (MeHg), an organic and more toxic form of Hg, in water, soil, sediment, aquatic plants, molluscs, fish and piscivorous birds in the two main rivers of the Juruena National Park, the Juruena and Teles rivers Rivers.
