Marta López Saavedra
Description
Marta López-Saavedra is a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) and co-founder and Scientific co-Lead of the Natural Risks Assessment and Management Service (NRAMS).
She holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Barcelona (UB), awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize, specializing in multi-hazard assessment, natural multi-risk management, and climate change adaptation. She also holds a dual Bachelor's degree in Geology and Environmental Sciences (UAB), a Master's degree in Mineral Resources and Geological Risks (UB), and a postgraduate degree in Volcanology (UdG), receiving Extraordinary Awards for all her official university degrees.
Her research focuses on compound and cascading risk assessment, probabilistic modelling, artificial intelligence, and decision-support systems for disaster risk reduction. She is co-developer of the MultiRiskBox platform, an operational technological solution designed to support public administrations and private entities in natural risk assessment and emergency management. She has participated in several national and European research and innovation projects, including EVE, GarMultiRisk, VOLCAN, MAPCAN, and currently leads international cooperation and capacity-building projects. Her research has been published in leading international journals, including Earth-Science Reviews, Journal of Geophysical Research, and the Earth System Science Data, and she is also co-author of several book chapters, including the 3rd edition of the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes.
She has extensive international experience through collaborations, scientific conferences (EGU, IUGG, MedGU), expert advisory activities for European institutions, and participation in initiatives under the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). She is also actively involved in university teaching (UB and UdG), co-directs the International Field Course on Physical Volcanology, serves as reviewer for international journals, and promotes research transfer through innovation programmes such as InspiraTech (Fundación Innovación Bankinter), Pre-Acceleration (Barcelona Activa), De la Ciència al Mercat (StartUB), and the Science for Policy Pairing Programme of Oficina C. She actively engages in science communication through outreach activities, media contributions, and her platform @geomartalopez.
