Two IDAEA projects are presented in the Circular Economy Hotspot Catalonia 2021

17 November 2021

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) participates in the Circular Economy Hotspot Catalonia 2021, which is being held between 15 and 19 November, 2021. The event combines itineraries in local companies and institutions with a conference to explore the most urgent challenges and their solutions. It is the place to discover business initiatives, R&D projects, government strategies, and collaborations that drive the circular economy in Europe.

Visitors from the Water Cycle Tour visited the IDAEA laboratories to know more about two European projects related to a circular economy:

  • RECOPPs – Recovering of added-value raw materials Bismuth and Antimony with integrated removal of the hazardous Arsenic (As) from the residues and by-products generated during the pyrometallurgical production of Copper. Dra. Patricia Córdoba, the principal investigator and coordinator of the project, explained the objective and necessity of RECOPPS to achieve a circular economy in the European industrial sector.

  • LifeSPOT, – Developing sustainable solutions for treating groundwater pollution to meet drinking water directive standards. Dra. Mònica Escolà explained how this project is using microalgae and cork to remove contaminants coming from farming.

Several IDAEA researchers will also participate in brokerage meetings with industry, private companies, and the public administration in order to foster collaboration between stakeholders.
