The IDAEA researcher Estanislao Pujades, from the Groundwater and Hydrogeochemistry group, has been included in the Forbes list Top 50 Awarded Spaniards for his studies on hydroelectric energy. Specifically, he received the “Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award ” issued by the European Geosciences Union for his research on the interaction between groundwater and underground reversible hydroelectric plants located in abandoned mines.

Dr. Pujades, together with Xavier Sánchez-Vila and Agustín Sánchez-Lavega, investigated, through numerical models, the consequences (on the environment and on the efficiency of hydroelectric central) of the water exchanges that occur between the underground environment and the mine used as a reservoir.

All this research allowed us to know the behavior of the system, the variables that control it, and establish guidelines for the design and construction of future underground pumped reversible hydroelectric energy stations so that maximize your efficiency and reduce potential impacts in the environment.
