IDAEA has participated in 5 activities of The Science Week (Semana de la Ciencia)

25 November 2021

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC), in its commitment to fostering the scientific culture to the society, has participated in several activities of The Science and Technology Week (La Semana de la Ciencia y la Tecnología del CSIC), celebrated between 12 and 21 November.

MinerMat 2021

MinerMat 2021 took place between 15 and 19 November. In collaboration with the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), Gecosciences Barcelona (GEO3BCN-CSIC) and Fira Barcelona, and led by the Dr. Ignasi Queralt, from the Environmental Geochemistry and Atmospheric Research (EGAR) group, 15 talks and workshops about geology, mineralogy and sustainable development were held online. The researchers Xavier Querol and Patricia Córdoba, both from EGAR group, participated explaining their research on African dust and the circular economy in copper production respectively.

Plàtans, raigs còsmics, Txernòbil: La radioactivitat que ens envolta

The researcher Maria Izquierdo, from the EGAR group, visited the high-schools Mila i Fontanals and IES Miquel Tarradell en Raval neighborhood to talk about natural radioactivity in the environment and human exposure.

¿Sabes qué respiras?  & Green thinking: diseñando ideas para un futuro sostenible

On 19 November, students from the high school Prat Educació visited IDAEA-CSIC to participate in two activities:

  • Particulate matter is part of the air pollution problem. The activity was carried out by the researcher Natalia Moreno, from the EGAR group. Using sensors, students could observe how common products, such as incense, release fine particles to the air, entering the body through capillaries in the lungs.
  • Communication strategies for sustainable projects. The activity was led by the pre-doctoral researcher Samanta Rojas, from the RECOPPs project. Students were involved in a brainstorming dynamic to design a hashtag to communicate the problem with industrial waste.
