On 18 March, the auditorium of the CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona hosted the eighth edition of the Water Innovation Day, the leading event in the water sector organised by the Catalan Water Partnership (CWP), with the aim of promoting knowledge transfer and collaboration among the wide diversity of stakeholders in the sector. The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) has been a member of this cluster since 2022, contributing cutting-edge analytical techniques for the detection of contaminants, as well as innovation projects focused on developing solutions to the current challenges of water resources.
The event hosted a total of 140 attendees from companies, technology centres, universities and institutions, who gathered to share innovative initiatives and explore new opportunities for collaboration. This year, 15 R&D projects for the sustainable use of water and 6 projects from the AEI call were presented. Among the R&D projects, Evgeny Bulatov presented AWA Monitoring, which won the first prize, selected by the attendees in real time.
AWA Monitoring is an innovative technology that improves water quality control by offering economically viable, scientifically sound and innovative solution to organic pollution in aquatic environments. The Ceramic Passive Samplers (CPS) technology ensures the detection of a wide range of organic pollutants in aquatic environments.
“The combination of Ceramic Passive Samplers and advanced analytics enables us to perform wide-ranging and long-term monitoring of organic contaminants”, explains Evgeny Bulatov, CEO & CTO of AWA Monitoring and IDAEA-CSIC researcher.
This recognition aims to highlight the efforts of companies and research centres in developing technological solutions that help address current water challenges.
As emphasised by Jordi Cros, President of the CWP, “the challenges in our sector remain enormous, and that is why we need more knowledge, more cooperation and greater capacity to turn ideas into real solutions”. In the same vein, he recalled that “the best way to predict the future is to create it”, and noted that the event would focus on projects that are already helping to build that future.
The Water Innovation Day has established itself as a key forum for innovation, technology transfer and the generation of new collaborations within the water sector in Catalonia.
