The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) is looking for a predoctoral researcher to develop their thesis on assessing the environmental and human health risk of compostable bioplastic (BP) materials applying an innovative multi-level framework, integrating Effect-Directed Analysis (EDA), High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
The candidate will investigate how complex chemical mixtures associated with compostable BPs, including transformation products (TPs) generated during composting and environmental exposure, interact with biological systems across levels of organization – from in vitro human and fish cell models to soil-plant mesocosms – and will help benchmark the risk to humans and fish of consuming edible crops exposed to these materials.
What do we look for?
- Qualifications
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, or a related field. - Competences
- Skills in analytical chemistry (LC-MS/HRMS) and/or in vitro cell-based bioassays / ecotoxicology are positively evaluated.
- Genuine interest in interdisciplinary work spanning environmental chemistry, cell biology and toxicology.
- Skills in data analysis, statistics/R programming and scientific writing will be positively evaluated.
- It is an essential requirement that you have an excellent level of English.
- Creativity, autonomy, and a collaborative, easy-going character will be an advantage.
Working conditions
- Contract duration: 4 years (FPI predoctoral contract associated with the project)
- Estimated annual gross salary: corresponding to FPI predoctoral salary
- Target start date: November 2026
