The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to apply for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 call.
The selected candidate will develop a fellowship proposal under the supervision of Dr. Nicola Montemurro, within the ONHEALTH group at IDAEA-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain).
The project will target complex chemical mixtures, including wastewater-derived pollutants, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, persistent and mobile chemicals, tire-related chemicals, transformation products and other emerging contaminants. These compounds may enter agricultural and aquatic environments through treated wastewater reuse, runoff, surface water contamination and soil-water transfer, with potential implications for ecosystems, food safety and human health.
The research will combine green analytical chemistry with advanced instrumental platforms, including LC–IMS–HRMS, suspect screening, non-target analysis and MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry imaging. These tools will be used to investigate the occurrence, transformation, uptake, bioaccumulation and spatial distribution of contaminants in matrices such as water, soil, crops, aquatic biota and biological tissues.
What do we look for?
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, green analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, mass spectrometry, environmental exposomics, environmental toxicology or a related field.
Professional experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: method development and validation; SUPRAS and/or DES-based extraction; miniaturised sample preparation; LC–MS/MS, LC–HRMS, GC–MS or GC–HRMS; ion mobility–HRMS; MALDI mass spectrometry imaging; suspect screening, non-target analysis, HRMS data processing, environmental fate, contaminant uptake, bioaccumulation, transformation products, or integration of chemical analysis with bioanalytical/ecotoxicological assays.
Competences
The ideal candidate should be scientifically curious, creative, well organised and capable of working independently while contributing to an interdisciplinary team. Strong motivation to develop an original research line, good communication and writing skills, initiative, and fluency in written and spoken English are expected.
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to co-develop a proposal for the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 – European Fellowship with IDAEA-CSIC as the host institution. This is an expression of interest for the preparation of a joint proposal; the position will become available only if the proposal is selected for funding.
Please note that applicants must comply with the eligibility criteria of the MSCA PF 2026 call. In particular, candidates must hold a PhD degree by the call deadline; have a maximum of 8 years of research experience, and comply with MSCA PF Mobility Rule, available in the “2.3.2. Recruited researchers” section of the Work Programme MSCA 2026-2027
Working conditions
- Contract duration: 2 years
- Salary: according to the MSCA PF funding scheme and applicable institutional regulations, including the relevant MSCA allowances where applicable.
- Target start date: Sspring–summer 2027, subject to evaluation outcome and grant agreement preparation.
