Teresa Moreno, Severo Ochoa Scientific Director

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA), part of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), has been distinguished with the award of the prestigious Severo Ochoa accreditation of excellence granted by the State Research Agency attached to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

The objective of the Severo Ochoa Program is to support competitive science research taking place in Spain, identifying and promoting research centres that have positioned themselves among the best in the world in their respective areas. These research centres stand out for their high competitiveness, their ambitious strategic plans, top-quality scientific production and a strong capacity to attract national and international talent. The selection procedure is carried out transparently, based on international best practices, with an independent committee made up of more than a hundred internationally renowned scientists.

Thanks to this recognition, IDAEA-CSIC will receive one million euros per year for four years to invest in its research programs, in addition to preferential access to scientific facilities, flexibility in the hiring of researchers, and enhanced ability to attract funding. This accreditation is a recognition of IDAEA’s work in environmental research over the last 10 years, and will promote the synergistic expansion of its scientific talent and research programs.

Water and Air

IDÆA is a multidisciplinary research institute focused on the scientific understanding of key environmental challenges facing society, especially those linked to water and air quality issues. IDÆA´s investigation, training, and education programmes cultivate fertile ground for cross-subject innovation from local to global scales. Since its foundation a decade ago IDÆA has striven to perform at an outstanding level on environmental research, guided by the principle that our scientific understanding of current threats to global ecosystems is best approached from a holistic, systems-based viewpoint. We have followed our mission to aim high by leading international projects, adopting a high profile in the scientific community, and publishing prolifically in Q1 and D1 journals. Our staff members include individuals belonging to the elite group of scientists most cited in atmospheric science and water chemistry. This success has led in turn to involvement with, and direct influence on, the environmental policies of top-level intergovernmental organisations such as WHO, EC Environment, and the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). Our ambition, strong analytical base, and proven record to date have placed us in an optimal research position to launch a new phase of expansion as outlined in this strategic plan for 2019-2022.

Within the Severo Ochoa project six individual research lines will characterise IDÆA:

  • Water Chemistry,
  • Chemometrics,
  • Ecotoxicology,
  • Biogeochemistry,
  • Hydro-Geoscience
  • Atmospheric Geochemistry
