Engaging stakeholders to improve governance and policy responses to emerging contaminants in European seas

Organised in the framework of EU Green Week 2026, ONE-BLUE: Invisible pollutants, real impacts will explore how Europe can strengthen its response to contaminants of emerging concern in marine environments, including microplastics, pharmaceutical residues and other persistent pollutants.

Although often invisible, these contaminants can affect marine ecosystems, biodiversity and potentially human health through seafood pathways and marine food webs. Their impacts may also be intensified by climate change, which is altering ocean conditions and contaminant dynamics.

The event will bring together representatives from European institutions, research organisations, public authorities, economic sectors and civil society to discuss how scientific evidence can better support environmental policymaking. The conversation will focus on science-policy cooperation, stakeholder engagement, governance barriers and collaboration among European projects working on marine pollution.

Organised in the framework of the Horizon Europe project ONE-BLUE and presented by IDAEA researcher and project coordinator, Marinella Farré, the event will draw on research carried out across the Atlantic, Arctic and Mediterranean to support more coordinated, evidence-based and policy-relevant responses to emerging marine pollution in Europe.
