The EGAR team conducted two phases of fieldwork aimed at characterizing these compounds and gaining deeper insight into the identification of their sources in the urban environment.

The first phase took place from January 20 to 30, during which urban background measurements were performed at the institute’s own facilities. Subsequently, from February 17 to March 2, the equipment was relocated to the Eixample monitoring station, located in the centre of Barcelona, to complete a series of measurements in an area more strongly influenced by traffic and urban activity.

VOCs are compounds present in urban air that can originate from multiple sources (traffic, industrial activities, household products, or natural processes) and they play an important role in air quality, as well as in the formation of tropospheric ozone and secondary aerosols. Through these measurement campaigns, researchers aim to determine the origin and atmospheric behaviour of these pollutants in Barcelona.

In parallel, and as part of the same project, identical campaigns are being conducted in Berlin, which will allow researchers to compare results between the two cities, characterized by very different climatic conditions and urban patterns. This comparison will help identify similarities and specific features in VOC sources, as well as support progress toward more effective strategies to mitigate air pollution in European urban environments.

URBANVOC Measurements and modelling for advancing knowledge of NMVOC concentrations in urban air and associated emission sources in Berlin and Barcelona.
