Project Description

MOnitoring of MIcroplastics in Air and assessment of human exposure and risks through inhalation and ingestion.

IDAEA internal call: SINERGIA 2020, Severo Ochoa funding

Description

MOMIA project aims at determining the occurrence and effects of microplastics in indoor and outdoor air from urban environments and evaluate the risks towards human health.

Specific objectives

(i) to develop a sampling and analytical methodology capable to detect MP in air considering the respirable fraction of airborne particulate matter (PM10) and also the ingestion fraction (PM>10 µm),
(ii) to monitor the presence of MPs in air from several environments (houses, schools, theatres, museums, public libraries, road dust) to determine occurrence and
(iii) to estimate human exposure through inhalation and ingestion and evaluate potential risks according to toxicological data of the different types of polymers detected.

Starting date: 1 June 2020
