WHO WE ARE?

EGAR belongs to the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA) from the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).
Our research team has developed robust atmospheric pollution monitoring and chemical characterization strategies, focusing on aerosols but also including semi-volatile organic species such as persistent organic pollutants, drugs of abuse and gaseous pollutants.
Research Lines

Aerosol Chemistry &
Source Apportionment
We perform detailed chemical characterization of atmospheric particles and identify emission sources using advanced receptor models (e.g., PMF, CMB). Our work helps understand aerosol composition, transformation and environmental and health impacts.
Air Quality Monitoring &
Sensor Innovation
We develop and evaluate high‑precision monitoring strategies and low‑cost sensor technologies. Our expertise covers urban, industrial and background environments, ensuring high‑quality data for research and policy applications.
Atmospheric Modelling &
Data Science
We combine numerical modelling, remote sensing, big data and machine learning to analyse pollution trends, predict atmospheric behaviour and integrate observational data with model outputs.
Urban Air Pollution &
Human Exposure
We investigate pollution levels in cities, human exposure patterns and the effects of mitigation strategies (mobility policies, emission reductions, industrial controls). Our work informs public health assessments and policymaking.sol composition, transformation and environmental and health impacts.
Climate–Air Quality Interactions
We study how aerosols interact with meteorology and climate, including radiative effects, feedbacks and future scenarios. Our research supports long‑term environmental planning and climate‑air quality assessments.
