Third PMF training course

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of particles emitted by multiple sources. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) is a widely used receptor model to perform PM source apportionment studies, identifying main sources of pollution and estimating their contributions to PM concentrations in ambient air.

International experts on receptor models and their applications to environmental sciences will offer a comprehensive training course on the use of USEPA PMF 5 program.

The course will cover the following topics:
* Input data uncertainty estimates
* Case studies for contrasting types of environment
* Apportionment of PMx, Organic matter, road dust, etc.
* Coupling of meteorological and epidemiological data

The training course is addressed mostly to PMF beginners (PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and environmental technicians).

The “Guidebook of measures to improve urban air quality”

The “Guidebook of measures to improve urban air quality” is a free and useful tool for policy, research, education, industry and environmental agencies to improve air quality in cities in the short and long term.

This Guidebook presents the results of the AIRUSE LIFE Project (LIFE11 ENV/ES/584) offering a state-of-the-art compilation of measures to improve air quality in cities.

The primary goal is to assess Southern European environments, although many of the suggested measures can be applied to other regions. The Guidebook, available in five languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Greek) at www.cleanaircities.net consists of 7 chapters:

  1. Case studies of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) trend analysis and source apportionment
  2. Measures to reduce emissions from construction/demolition works
  3. Measures to reduce emissions from the industrial sector
  4. Measures to reduce emissions from road dust resuspension
  5. Measures to reduce emissions from biomass burning
  6. The experience of Northern and Central Europe in improving urban air quality
  7. A proposed Eco-labelling scheme for European vehicles
